On this day in history, July 1, 1847, the US Post Office issues the first stamps

The first postage stamps issued by the United States Postal Service made their debut on this day in history, July 1, 1847. The stamps sold for five and 10 cents each.
A California post office will be named after Ray Chavez, who was the oldest military veteran to survive Japan's 1941 attack on U.S. forces in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when he died in 2018.
